Hailing from Kerala, India, Dr. Jacob was on 12th September 1942 at the hamlet of Kappumthala in Kottayam District. Annamma and Joseph Kochupurackal were his parents. After completing high school, young Jacob joined the Good Shepherd Minor Seminary, Kottayam for his sacerdotal studies. He did his philosophy at Carmalagiri, Aluva, and for theology he joined St. Joseph’s Major Seminary at Mangalapuzha. Palai Bishop, Mar Sebastian Vayalil ordained him a priest in his own parish at Holy Ghost forane Church, Muttuchira.
His first play titled, ‘Satan Under Arrest’ was published during the course of his priestly studies at Mangalapuzha Major Seminary. His second play ‘Pushpikunna pradheekshakal’ came out within a year, and it won a national award. After his ordination, Fr. Jacob served the people in the capacity of assistant vicar for five years. He was fortunate enough to work along with blessed Fr.Kunjachan at Ramapuram for two years. Next three years he served as lecturer in theology at Jyothis Theological College, Palai.
He went to Rome for higher studies on 8th October 1974. From the Holy week in 1975 he served as Confessor in St. Peter’s Basilica for one year. Fr. Jacob succeeded in qualifying for Doctorate in dogmatic theology ‘Magna cum laude’ from the Gregorian University in Rome. Pope John Paul II allowed a German widow Maria Josten’s request to take as her adopted son and he became a great son of that mother and accepted their last name along with his name. For the past thirty seven years Dr. Jacob has been suffering from serious eye problems which rendered him almost blind. But with his deep trust in Christ and courage Dr. Jacob goes on serving the faithful with a lot of help from others, and succeeded in completing and publishing the novel: ‘The Mysterious Gate Opens’ which won him an award from J.K.Bill International from Ireland on 15th August 2012. After his adopted mother’s death, Dr. Jacob brought out her heroic life history titled, Maria Josten. This book also won Captain Lekshmi Women’s Power International award on 18th Feb. 2013. His other published works are ‘Life History of Saints’ (with Pictures) and ‘Know Your Guardian Angel’. For the last thirty three years Rev. Dr. Jacob Josten Kochupurackal is serving as the vicar of St. Martin’s Church in the diocese of Aachan in Germany. On 31st December 2015 he has retired.
